Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil Hair Treatment {Review & Giveaway}

Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil Hair Treatment from Tropical Traditions has been an amazing treatment for D’s hair. Just this past week, after I washed, conditioned, and detangled D’s hair, I added some Bee Mine Luscious moisturizer then sealed with the Gold Label Coconut Oil Hair Treatment, I banded her hair in 4 sections to prepare it for styling the next evening. The next morning I took the 4 banded sections down and did 2 banded ponytails, I needed her hair to stay as stretched and untangled as possible because that evening I was going to straighten her hair. Her hair was extremely soft and moisturized and I felt it was going to be protected from the heat of the flat iron by the coconut oil treatment.

A Sidewinder Hairstyle: Saturdays "Shappin" Style

For this style we did the basic 2 ponies in the front, 1 in the back, I braided each ponytail in small braids and added our mixed and matched Sidewinder Hairholders, with star, heart and barrel beads on the ends.

Saturday’s Shappin’ Style: Criss Cross Braids and Finger Curled Ponies

For this style I made 8 small braids in the front and criss-crossed 6 of them them into 2 ponytails in the back. I finger curled sections of the ponytails and left 2 hanging braids on each side, to which I added some glow in the dark star beads.

Saturdays “Shappin” Hairstyle: 4th of July Style Braid Out

I have been slackin’ on my Saturday Style posts and I do apologize! I wanted to share photos of D’s braid out from her braids that we did for the 4th of July. I removed the bands and beads, then used my fingers and the end of a rat tail comb to take out the braids. We, of course, had to add a flower clip to accessorize.

Saturdays “Shappin” Hairstyle: ZigZag Pigtails

ZigZag parts are a great way to spice up a style. You can created a zigzag part to add some fun to any regular pig tail style.

I made a zigzag part down the middle of her head, stopping about halfway to add a pony tail in the back.

I put 2 braids in each of the 2 ponytails on the side, just to have a variation of the standard braided pigtail do. The next day I switched out the accessories. She wore this style for 2 days.

D wanted to share a picture of the Tinker Bell nails she put on all by herself:

These “press on” nails definitely did not last as long as the hair style did, they never do!

 

 

Saturdays “Shappin” Hairstyle: Fireworks!

What Independence Day celebration is complete without a festive hairstyle for your little one! For this 4th of July I wanted to incorporate some patriotic colored beads and create a style resembling a firework.

 

To create this look, start with clean, detangled, well moisturized hair. Then part out a circle around your child's head, clip the hair in the center, back out of the way and begin creating box braids.

Continuing doing this around the head for 2 rounds. When you are ready to part the center circle to make it look like a “firework”, imagine cutting a pizza or a pie, and part it as such, like this:

 

 

 

The standard pony beads are from the craft section at Wal-Mart. I used some jumbo white stars, and some medium barrel red, clear, and red transparent beads for the braids in the outmost circle, I made those braids bigger so that I could use these beads, which I got from Curly Hair Princess Boutique.

To secure the beads on the braids, I take the hair and fold it up over the last bead, then add the rubber and slide the other beads down over the band. This technique holds the beads on much better than just adding a rubber band to end, most beads will slip over the rubber band.

Saturdays “Shappin” Hairstyle: Kia-Lan Inspired Buns and Braids

This is a great summer style, because the nature of the buns protect the hair, especially the ends, from the sun and water if there is swimming involved. D’s hair had been washed, detangle and moisturized with Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer prior to styling. To create this look, I started by parting down the middle then parting out the sections in the front I wanted to cornrow. I made 2 ponytails, putting each in 2 braids.

I then twisted the braids into buns and secured them with cloth bands and added scrunchies over each bun. Lastly, I did the 2 cornrows in front along her hair line…now my cornrows aren’t perfect, lol, I am still working on those.

She wore it like this for a day, then I added the front braids to her buns and she wore it that way for several days.

Saturday’s “Shappin” Hairstyle: Jumbo Braids & Beads

This style is a fun, easy, colorful do! I parted her hair down the middle, then parted each side into 3 sections, and ponytailed them with different color no-metal bands. I braided 2 braids in each pony and added some coordinating colored beads and white stars. I used the jumbo barrel multi-colored translucent beads and jumbo white star beads from Curly Princess Hair Boutique. D loved the style and the beads. I believe I used Bee Mine Curly Butter for this one. :)

Saturday's "Shappin" Hairstyle: Quick Random Parts

Our weekly showcased hairstyle this time around is one of D's favorites and it is easy and quick...win-win-win!

It is simply randomly parted sections (squares, triangles, diamonds) as many or as few as you'd like or have the time for. With this particular style we ended up with 6 braids. Her hair had been washed, detangled and moisturized, this time we used the Curl and Style Milk for hold. And I used the no metal ponytail holders.











A quick and easy tip: put the hair in 4-6 braids then after a day or 2 split each braid into and change out the hair tie colors or accessories  for a new look!

Saturday's "Shappin" Hairstyle: Triangle Flat Twists and 2 Strand Hanging Twists

This Saturday's style was the only style from our recent SheaMoisture products reveiw that hadn't been shown on our "Shappin" Style section, so I wanted to get it up.





This one was a first for me, as I had never parted triangle sections for flat rolling twists before. I started out parting the triangle in the center, then twisted the hair and made 2 more triangle twists, one on each side of the first.  With the hair that was remaining on the sides I did 2 strand hanging twists. As I always do, I had soaked the rubber bands used to secure the twists in olive oil prior to styling. I also added some of the cute butterfly clips I received from Once Upon a Curl. For the hanging twists I added some jumbo beads on the ends, those were also from Once Upon a Curl.







(Sometimes when it comes to photos and kiddos...you take what you can get, lol)

Saturday's "Shappin" Hairstyle: Poofy Side Pony + Tangle Teezer

This weeks "Shappin" Style is one of D's all-time favorites (probably because it is so quick and easy), and I love it too! The poofy side pony! The way we get this look:





Once her hair has been washed, moisturized and detangled, we either braid or band her hair in 3 or more sections. She will either just sleep in the braids/bands or wear it as a style for a day or two, either way once her hair is dry we take it down and brush it using the Tangle Teezer. The Tangle Teezer creates a nice poof and we are then able to smooth into a cute side ponytail.












*Update- I would like to note that we no longer use the Tangle Teezer to detangle. I had notice a lot of breakage going on about a month or so ago (after we began using the Tangle Teezer). When we first started using the TT, I thought it was amazing! With some Kinky-Curly Knot Today and the Tangle Teezer the tangles just slid right out. There was always hair in the TT after each use, I just thought it was shed hair. After becoming aware of the breakage D was having and upon examining the "shed hair" it was apparent that it was actually breakage from the TT :(  I was using it correctly and even finger detangling prior to each TT use and nothing else in our routine had changed, what a bummer, I had been so excited and wowed by this brush. D had loved it too, it was quick and it didn't hurt. I haven't used the Tangle Teezer in about a month but if I were to use it again, it would be soley to create fluff and poof, and I would completely detangle her hair beforehand.

Saturdays "Shappin" Hairstyle: Rolling Twists/Braid Out+Kinky-Curly Review

This “shappin” style was created using Kinky-Curly Curling Custard along with Kinky Curly Come Clean shampoo and Knot Today detangler. After I washed, detangled and moisturized I parted a square on top of her head where I created 5 rolling twists. The twists were a little stiff due to the Curling Custard, but they held for days! I braided the remaining sections of hair on each side into one braid a piece and I made four braids in the back, putting Curling Custard on each section before braiding. The next day before school I took the braids out for a really nice braid out,  we loved it!

Saturdays "Shappin" Hairstyle: Happy Mothers' Day Do

I've been wanting to do this style on D for a while and I just now got around to trying it. The first thing I did was wash her hair with a "new shampoo" (review coming soon!), I used our regular HEHH (on our last bottle of the old formua). I moisturized with the usual Bee Mine Dejas Hair Milk (which is almost gone, luckily there is a 15% off code floating around for Bee Mine Products!) I also use a little olive oil on her ends and scalp, they needed it. I parted out 6 small squares in front, applied Bee Mine Curly Butter and banded them into ponytails with olive oil soaked bands. 





Next I put the headband on and sectioned each ponytail into and began criss crossing them. I took a small section of hair right behind the headband to secure the criss crossed pieces to. I was happy with the way the top/front turned out, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the back...

I tried it down...



I tried it in a bun, which I liked...





But I decided I really wanted to use the Curlformers again!





And we loved it! :)

Saturdays "Shappin" Hairstyle: Veil Style Braids into a Ponytail of Small Braids

How it's done:

After washing, detangling and moisturizing; I parted out a circle, starting approximately 1 1/2 inches out from Ds hairline. I clipped the remaining hair in the center out of the way. And began parting squares and making ponytails all the way around using Bee Mine Curly Butter on each section. As always, I had previously soaked the rubber bands in extra virgin olive oil. Once I had all the ponytails done I split each one in two sections and braided them. When that was done I parted out a second circle and clipped the rest of the hair out of the way. The squares in this round are parted off center to the ones in the first round. I then started adding the braids to these squares in a veil style fashion. I continued doing this all the way around.

Once I finished that, I gathered the braids and remaining hair into a single ponytail and braided the hair that hadn't been braided yet in small braids matching the other braids in size. And vio-la!

Saturdays "Shappin" Hairstyle: "V" Shaped Rolling Twists

This weeks "shappin" style is the "V" shaped rolling twists.

How I got this look:

After washing, detangling and moisturizing, I parted her hair from ear to ear and tied off the back section to keep it out of the way. I parted the front section down the middle, then parted out a small "V", this made two little sections (one on each side of the middle part). I sprayed on our oil mix, rubbed it into her hair and scalp, then added some Bee Mine Curly Butter and began the rolling twist. Once I was done I secured it with an elastic band that had been previously soaked in extra virgin olive oil. I continued doing this until I until I was done with the entire front section. I let the back down and she wore a headband.

I switched it up with a ponytail and a bow.

This style lasted 5 days!
