Going "No-'Poo": Guest Post
This guest post is coming to you via Brittany of The Pistachio Project
Ready for an extremely crunchy topic? No 'poo! No, I am not talking about not going to the bathroom, I am referring to the method of not shamPOOing your hair.
Before you start thinking, EWW, gross! Let me explain. No 'pooing does not mean that you are not washing your hair. Although some die hard crunchies will go that far and only wash with water. It does not begin that way and it does not have to end that way.Read more »

Hair Nightmares: Relaxers
They say, "Mama knows best." I believe that now, but I was skeptical back then. That's why I begged for a perm. I was persistent with my question, but she was consistent with her answer.
Years went by. No perm.
Then, it happened.

Babo Botanicals UV Conditioning Spray Review
During these hot summer months many of us are doing what we can to protect our children from the sun and UV rays by means of sunscreen and protective clothing. I recently discovered an all natural UV hair and scalp protecting spray by Babo Botanicals. Their products are created with the highest quality organic botanical ingredients from an organic farm.
*Fun Fact: This brand was named after the founder’s son’s security bunny, Babo.
The Product:
Cucumber Aloe Vera UV Sport Conditioning Spray
Certified Organic Nutri-Soothe™ Blend rich in vitamins and anti-oxidants combines Chamomile, Watercress, Kudzu and Calendula, for swim, sun, and active play.
Price: $16.00 8 FL OZ
Benefits:
Keep active one's hair hydrated and protected
Plant-based conditioners help combat UV damage and dryness
UV Filter Wild Pansey helps resist effects of chlorine, salt and sun
Organic Aloe Vera and Cucumber revitalize and replenish moisture
Plant-based moisturizers smooth and detangle damp or dry hair.
Usage
Shake Well. Spray on hair before exposure to chlorine, salt or sun. Or spray on damp hair after bath or swimming to detangle and condition. Spray on dry hair to refresh and revitalize.
Ingredients:
Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf*, Purified Water (Agua), Polyquaternium 80 (Sugar), Organic Calendula Officinalis Extract*, Organic Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract*, Organic Nasturtium Officinale (Watercress) Extract*, Organic Pueraria Lobata (Kudzu) Root Extract*, Glycerine (Vegetable), Glucono Delta Lactone (Sugar), Polyquaternium 10 (Vegetable Fiber), Viola Tricolor (Wild Pansy)*, Potassium Sorbate (Food Grade Preservative), Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus) Extract , Natural Essential Oil Blend of Cucumber & Apple *Certified Organic ingredients
My Thoughts:
I have been using this product on my kiddos and their friends for a little over a month. I spray it on their hair and scalp for extra protection against the sun and chemicals from the pools. It is a lot easier and more convenient than trying to rub sunscreen on their scalps and it doesn’t cause build up. D’s hair seems to be staying pretty healthy despite all the swimming she does and this product has kept her scalp from burning/tanning. Now, I do use it on Baby Boys head even though he does wear a hat when he is outside…just some added protection to help ease my mind. As a detangler, it isn’t the best for D’s hair, she needs something more to get her tangles out, she does have thick curly locks, so to be fair I wanted to try it on her friends straight hair and it worked well as a detangler for her. Overall, I like the fact that it protects against the chlorine and UV rays and prevents the hair from completely drying out though all the fun in the sun and I love the all natural ingredients. Babo Botanicals has a great selection of all-natural hair and skin care products from babies and kids, I can’t wait to try their body washes and lotions.

Hair Nightmares from All Things Cute and Girly: Growing & Learning
WARNING: You will see pictures of my daughter's head looking a hot mess due to me not knowing ANYTHING about caring for curly hair. I am embarrassed and ashamed! But I am pleased to show how much of a difference hair blogs have helped changed our life! Sorry for the quality of the photos..its all from my phone.
My hair nightmare with my daughter began once it changed in texture and started to grow. As a baby, she had straight hair and I thought wow, this will be easy! When I was pregnant I always wondered how my daughter's hair would turn out with her being Filipino and African American.
Here are some photos her hair growing:
I always felt like her hair "grew up" and not down..I didn't know what to do! It was always so knotted and tangled that I would dread trying to brush it out. I didn't know anything about hair, let alone hair that was different from mine! It all began when she was around six or seven months when her hair started growing. I had no knowledge of how to care or style her hair at all. I was told from different people to “use baby oil”, “don't use baby oil”, “don't use water”, “grease her hair” ..on and on and on. I didn't know what to do! It seemed like every product I put into her hair would soak up and leave it drier than it was before. Most products I used contained mineral oil and petroleum/petrolatum. Her hair would feel so coarse and
knotted and I felt like it never grew. Her only style was pretty much a ponytail slapped on top of her head.
These are her famous hair dos back then:
I would just put them into a ponytail on top of her head. I also believe one of the photos shows how much tension was put onto the hair always being in ponytails for a long period of time which caused breakage. Eventually, I became really frustrated and last year around August when my daughter was 19m, I decided to look online for anything having to do with "mixed/biracial haircare, hair style, products etc". I honestly don't remember what I typed into Google but up came Happy Girl Hair! I was so obsessed with the site. I browsed the blog for hours looking at all the great information and hairstyles. I learned about all the no-no ingredients like mineral oil and petroleum (like I had been using!) a few hair products to try, the basic hair products I needed to begin with and hairstyle ideas. Now, just because I saw all these hairstyles it didn't mean I knew how to do them right away. I had no idea how to cornrow AT ALL here's a few examples to show you how horrible I was:

Saturdays “Shappin” Hairstyle: ZigZag Pigtails
I made a zigzag part down the middle of her head, stopping about halfway to add a pony tail in the back.
I put 2 braids in each of the 2 ponytails on the side, just to have a variation of the standard braided pigtail do. The next day I switched out the accessories. She wore this style for 2 days.
D wanted to share a picture of the Tinker Bell nails she put on all by herself:
These “press on” nails definitely did not last as long as the hair style did, they never do!

SmartMom Teething Bling
I chose this particular pendant for two reasons: 1) it will match almost anything I wear and 2) Baby Boy loves contrasting colors like black and white.
And he does love this necklace! When it first arrived, I put it on and picked him up, he immediately went for it and put it in his mouth…what baby wouldn’t?! He did not want me to put him down or take it off the entire evening.
When we are out and about we don’t have to try and keep up with a toy teether, because his teether is around my neck as a stylish piece of jewelry! To check out these pendants and their complete line of their jewelry visit SmartMom Jewelry.

Sidewinder Hair Holders: ABE Sponsor Spotlight
While I love the traditional beads on braids, Sidewinder Hair Holders have a unique look and can be used without rubber bands that have a tendency to be damaging to the hair. Sidewinder Hair Holders are considered to be an easy and fast alternative to hair beads. They are actually not that difficult to put in, despite what one may think upon first glance, there is a very easy to follow video tutorial on how they work on their website.
The concept of Sidewinders was born while the owner, Susan, was on a camping trip. She was surrounded by colorful twisted wind spinners on various RV’s and thought “Gee, that sure would look cute in the hair…” And she was right! They make an awesome hair accessory. Here is our collection of Sidewinder Hairholders:
Each piece is actually two pieces that “wind” apart (and wind back together), thus the colors can be interchanged and mixed and matched anyway you like.
The Sidewinders come in 3 different sizes, 3”, 2”. and 1”
You can visit their website to see their full selection of colors, sets, and pricing.
For the “A Blogtastic Extravaganza” we’ve got coming up in August (17th-22), Susan from Sidewinders has generously offered to sponsor us by providing 1 winner with 2 sets of 2” Sidewinder Hair Holders. Each of these sets will include ten 2” sidewinders:
The colors up for grabs are Liquid Fire and Hot Pink:
A HUGE thanks to Susan for this awesome contribution to our giveaway package!
Please like Sidewinder Hair Holders on Facebook and tell her hi and thanks on behalf of Untrained Hair Mom!

Saturdays “Shappin” Hairstyle: Fireworks!
What Independence Day celebration is complete without a festive hairstyle for your little one! For this 4th of July I wanted to incorporate some patriotic colored beads and create a style resembling a firework.
To create this look, start with clean, detangled, well moisturized hair. Then part out a circle around your child's head, clip the hair in the center, back out of the way and begin creating box braids.
The standard pony beads are from the craft section at Wal-Mart. I used some jumbo white stars, and some medium barrel red, clear, and red transparent beads for the braids in the outmost circle, I made those braids bigger so that I could use these beads, which I got from Curly Hair Princess Boutique.
To secure the beads on the braids, I take the hair and fold it up over the last bead, then add the rubber and slide the other beads down over the band. This technique holds the beads on much better than just adding a rubber band to end, most beads will slip over the rubber band.
Did you do a festive style on your little one? I would love to see it! Feel free to send it to me at untrainedhairmom@gmail.com
Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!!
